Tiles with No Spectra

چکیده

We exhibit a subset of a finite Abelian group, which tiles the group by translation, and such that its tiling complements do not have a common spectrum (orthogonal basis for their L space consisting of group characters). This disproves the Universal Spectrum Conjecture of Lagarias and Wang [7]. Further, we construct a set in some finite Abelian group, which tiles the group but has no spectrum. We extend this last example to the groups Z and R (for d ≥ 5) thus disproving one direction of the Spectral Set Conjecture of Fuglede [1]. The other direction was recently disproved by Tao [12]. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification. Primary 52C22, Secondary 20K01, 42B99.

Technical study of historical tiles of azure and yellow color Spectrum in mosaic and dual tiles

In Iranian architecture, colors were a powerful tool in design that, by using them correctly in decorations, added to the identity and impact of that space. One of the techniques of architects in decorating the space has been the use of complementary colors to create a proper harmony in the viewer's eyes. In this experimental-analytical study, CIE Lab analysis was used to quantitatively measu...

On Fuglede’s conjecture and the existence of universal spectra

R 5 Tao produced a spectral set which is not a tile, while Kolountzakis and Matolcsi showed an example of a non-spectral tile. In search of lower dimensional nonspectral tiles we were led to investigate the Universal Spectrum Conjecture (USC) of Lagarias and Wang [13]. In particular, we prove here that the USC and the “tile → spectral” direction of Fuglede’s conjecture are equivalent in any dim...

Quasi-Static and Dynamic Ballistic Damage Mechanisms in Confined Ceramic Tiles

Quasi-static and dynamic damage mechanisms in alumina tiles were investigated. The tiles were under a variety of boundary conditions at the tile's edges during impact NATO 0.3 cal. AP rounds with hardened and sharpened steel core were used. The alumina tile samples were 50x50 mm2 area, the thicknesses ranging from 5 to 12 mm. 'he tiles were mounted in a special confinement frame, which enabled ...

Calibrating ink spreading curves by optimal selection of tiles from printed color images

The Yule-Nielsen modified spectral Neugebauer model (YNSN) enables predicting reflectance spectra from ink surface coverages of halftones. In order to provide an improved prediction accuracy, this model is enhanced with an ink spreading model accounting for ink spreading in all superposition conditions (IS-YNSN). As any other spectral reflection prediction model, the IS-YNSN model is conceived ...
